Colosseum - Palatine Hill - Great Circus - monuments of antiquity, which will be discussed on the tour "Imperial Rome" from Adventus Tour.

Start with the Colosseum, its main symbol, walk through the intimate park on the Palatine Hill where in antiquity the patricians settled, giving way to emperors, and finish with a look at the Great Circus, or rather what remains of the largest hippodrome in ancient Rome.

Your imagination and our guide will play the role of a time machine and take you back to the time of the Roman Empire: a powerful state whose center was the city of Rome.

"Bread and circuses" were constantly demanded by its inhabitants. In 69 AD Vespasian - the first emperor of the Flavius dynasty - comes to power and makes a decision that will provide the people of Rome with spectacles on a permanent basis for many centuries. Construction begins on the largest standing amphitheater in stone designed for public games: gladiatorial battles and battles of wild animals, which were brought into the city to entertain crowds from all corners of the empire.  "The Flavian amphitheater served its intended purpose for five centuries. Then, after surviving the fall of the Western Roman Empire and changing its name from the light hand of the English Benedictine monk of the 8th century Venerable Bede to "Colosseum", the Roman amphitheater still continues to entertain, but now with its stories, becoming a spectacular symbol of the city and the leader in attendance among all attractions in Italy.

In five minutes' walk from the Colosseum, in the shade of pine trees hides the place where the history of ancient Rome originated - the Palatine Hill.

According to legend, to its foot the waters of the Tiber nailed a basket with two babies, Romulus and Remus.  On the hill in a cave lived a she-wolf, who fed the children with her milk, not allowing them to die of hunger. And then the shepherd Faustulus, whose hut was also located there, found and raised the twins. Years later, Romulus founded his city on Palatine Hill.

The remains of huts dating back to the eighth century BC show evidence that the hill was a favored place for settlement. Over time the Palatine became the elite residence of the Roman nobility - patricians, and then with the light hand of Octavian Augustus, who settled in a modest house, bought it from the orator Hortensius, eventually transformed into a luxurious palace complex, which for three hundred years served as the residence of the Roman emperors.

Gardens planted on the hill in the 16th century by order of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the ruins of imperial palaces and temples, views of the Roman Forum on one side and the Great Circus on the other - spectacular photos guaranteed.

From the terraces of Palatine Hill you can see the Great Circus, or rather what is left of its former splendor. Once there was a racetrack for racing chariots, the length of its racetrack in a circle equaled a kilometer, and the stands collected up to three hundred thousand spectators.

To help the imagination, Timur Bekmambetov's 2016 film Ben Hur (a remake of the 1959 film of the same name starring Kicker Douglas). Watch it before your trip - it will help you imagine what it was like, capture the heat of the circus arena and its grandstands, and clearly demonstrate the structure and architecture of the racetrack itself.
